Audi Q3 RS concept is Big News in Beijing

Audi first launched the Q3 – a five door compact coupe crossover – in 2011. The Q3 is based on the Volkswagen Group A5 (PQ35) platform from the Volkswagen Golf MK5 and fits into the Audi line up just above the upcoming Audi Q2 mini crossover. In comparison to the larger Q5 and Q7 cars which focus on practicality for families and off-road capability, the Q3 is being marketed as more of a lifestyle / sports utility vehicle.

Just one year after the initial launch Audi announced some big news for the Q3. At the 2012 Beijing Motor show the firm unveiled a new concept car – the Q3 RS concept. The RS concept is a Mini-SUV, a format which seems to be very popular right now and featured heavily in the 2012 Beijing show.

The primary focus of the RS concept is high-performance, taking the basic Q3 package from 2011 and taking the performance to a whole new level. The new concept car is capable of delivering power of up to 355bhp. This is delivered by a 2.5-litre engine which has been taken from the Audi TT-RS. With a maximum speed of 164mph and the ability to sprint up from 0-62mph in a time of 5.2 seconds the RS concept certainly demonstrates strong performance credentials compared to other cars in its sector.

The transmission system in the new concept car is a seven-speed dual-clutch S-Tronic, and this delivers power to all four wheels using the Audi quattro all-wheel drive system which is increasingly being rolled out across all of the firm’s cars.

This new concept version of the Audi Q3 has been lowered by 25mm to give it a more sporty look and feel, and the appearance has also been enhanced by a completely new RS body kit. At the front of the car the honeycomb grille has been given a distinctive RS styling treatment, and at the back there is a new carbon fibre reinforced plastic spoiler.

The paintwork of the Audi A3 RS concept is blue, in homage to the original RS2. On the inside of the vehicle there is matching Nappa leather and Alcantara interior finishes.

So far nothing has been said about a production launch of this new concept vehicle, but watch out for more news coming out soon about this because there is a good chance that the features of this new concept car will make it into production in some form before too long.
